A squad that is packed full of experience and talent from keeper Buffon to midfielders Pirlo & Gattuso to frontman Luca Toni -the craft of how to open teams up and then kill the game won them the last World Cup.
Under young coach Donadoni (42) they play attractive, neat football and should emerge as winners of the tournament's toughest group. Could get an easy route to the semis where a possible re-match with either France or Holland awaits.

Holland

The Dutch will have to be at their brilliant best to progress from the most difficult group -with France and Italy for company.
Van Basten's team are a fairly defensive lot when you recall what an attacking force he was back in 1988 -but with the likes of van Nistelroy, Huntelaar, van Persie and Robben in attack goals shouldnt be a problem!
Where they may struggle is in midfield/defense, with only Seedorf remaining of the recognised stars now that Staam, Davids and Cocu have retired.
Avoiding defeat against either France or Italy could see them needing to beat Romania to go through to the knockout stages of a tournament which would be much richer for a sea of orange!

France

Twice winners of this competition (1984 & 2000), the French can be slow starters -which may be a problem with the Dutch & Italians in their group. Could be a toss-up of which is slower -their start or their ageing defence & midfield which includes Thuram, Viera & Makalele.
French fans will be hoping the strike force of Henry, Anelka & Benzema (a target for Man Utd) will receive enough service from the tricky Ribery to get the goals to see through to the knockout stages.
Could see them in a winner take all showdown on June 17 with Italy -if so, don't bet your house on them...
